You can write about a sports injury, a grandmother, or a hobby, and any of them can be exceptional or forgettable. What separates a great essay from a mediocre one isn't the topic; it's the depth of self-reflection at the end.
Read your draft out loud. If you wouldn't say it that way in conversation, rewrite it. Admissions officers can instantly tell when a student is trying to sound impressive. Authenticity reads as maturity.
The first sentence has to earn the second. Avoid rhetorical questions ('Have you ever wondered...?'), dictionary definitions, and quotes from famous people. Start in the middle of something real.
Students try to cover too much ground: 'I've been playing piano for 10 years and it taught me discipline, creativity, and how to handle failure.' Pick one moment within those 10 years and make us feel it. The narrow focus creates the broader impact.

Specific beats generic every time. 'I love MIT's collaborative culture' tells them nothing. 'Professor Chen's lab on soft robotics connects directly to my work on assistive devices at Eastside Robotics' tells them you've done real homework. Name professors, labs, programs, and courses, and explain the genuine connection to your own interests.
The 150-word 'Why major?' question is not a throwaway. Every word counts. Cut filler phrases ('I have always been passionate about…'), get to the intellectual core fast, and end with forward momentum: what you want to do, not just what you've done.
If the prompt asks about an extracurricular, don't describe what you did: explain what it changed in you, or what problem it showed you. The admissions committee already saw your activities list. The essay adds the human layer.
A UChicago supplement rewards intellectual playfulness and unconventional thinking. An Emory supplement rewards warmth and community fit. Read the prompt carefully, browse the school's values page, and calibrate accordingly.

The students who write the strongest essays start months before deadlines. Not because they spend more time writing, but because they give ideas time to breathe. A draft you walk away from for two weeks looks completely different when you return.
Look at all your essays side by side before submitting. Do they show different facets of you, or do they repeat the same themes? If three essays mention science, consider whether one could highlight leadership, creativity, or humor instead.
Your parent or best friend can tell you if something sounds like you. Someone who doesn't know you (like a Luminao mentor) can tell you if the essay communicates clearly to a stranger reading it cold. You need both kinds of feedback.

'I plan to join the debate team and major in economics' belongs in the 'Why This School' essay, not the personal statement. The personal statement is about who you are, not what you'll do next.
Writing about a difficult experience is fine, but it needs to end with insight, not with you claiming the experience made you stronger. Show the reader the specific thing you understand now that you didn't before. Generic resilience messaging is the most common trap in adversity essays.
